Tight package

Nov 1, 2001 12:00 PM, by Wayne Wenzel

For farmers who need to lift heavy loads in close quarters, Case IH offers three new XT-model skid steers. According to the company, the 40XT, 60XT and 70XT offer upgrades in power, lift capacity, lift height, comfort and reliability. Case also has improved the performance of its heavy-lifting 75XT. The four machines range from 65 to 85 hp with lift capacities from 1,500 to 2,200 lbs.

The compact, small-frame models are just 60 in. wide to allow them to fit through narrow openings, tight work spaces, machine sheds and barns. Two-way self-leveling is a $1,100 option that reduces load loss when raising or lowering the loader arms. A ride-control feature further reduces spillage by cushioning the load on rough terrain. Case says that, in addition to helping complete the job faster, these features contribute to better operator comfort and reduced wear on the machine.

Options include a 3,000-psi, high-flow hydraulic system for $2,500, and an automatic engine shutdown system designed to prevent component damage if temperatures or pressures exceed acceptable ranges. A hydraulic quick coupler on all XT models makes it possible to drop and switch buckets directly from the operator's compartment. Bucket options include forestry/excavating, low profile, extended lip, utility/light material and manure/slurry. A bale spike costs $500, and pallet forks range from $900 to $1,200. For $1,600, an available cab enclosure includes a glass front door with washer/wiper, rear top window, sliding side windows, heater, and power outlet for accessories.

Base prices for the new machines: $23,800 to $29,800. Contact Case Corp., Dept. FIN, 700 State St., Racine, WI 53404, 262/636-6011, www.caseih.com.
