With the potential for wet soils in some areas of the country this spring, compaction may be an issue during planting. Sidewall compaction in wet soils can be a problem, especially if the crop is “mudded-in” and a dry spell occurs after planting.
The North American Farm and Power Show featured new application equipment including a RoGator from Zeigler, Equipment Technology's Apache sprayer, John Deere's 4830 self-propelled sprayer, and a pull-behind fertilizer applicator from Fast. Also shown were residue managers from Yetter and monitor from AgLeader.
Farm King, a division of Buhler Industries, showed a new 60-ft. liquid fertilizer applicator for the first time at the 2013 National Farm Machinery Show. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) this week released its February flash report on unit retail sales of tractors and self-propelled combines.
Sales of 2- and 4-wheel drive tractors and self-propelled combinesthis year are tracking higher than the five-year average of sales for these products, according to the chart.
A total of 310 self-propelled combines were sold in February 2012, while in the same month this year, 533 combines were sold, making February 2013 sales 72 percent higher than February 2012 units sold....More

Farm Industry News senior editor Jodie Wehrspann travelled to Kansas City, Mo., to cover the 2013 Ag Connect Expo, the biannual global trade show of farm products and technologies. Farmers, manufacturers, engineers and others in the agriculture industry from the around the globe gathered at this three-day event held at the Kansas City Convention Center. Nearly 400 companies exhibited, requiring 30% more exhibit space than previous years.

Monticello, Minn., is becoming known as “Swan City” due to its large Trumpeter Swan populations during the winter months. More than 2,000 Trumpeter Swans enjoy a winter vacation along the banks of the Mississippi River within the city limits each winter. The location of the nuclear generating plant upstream allows for the water to remain unfrozen for the swans during the winter months. The dense swan population is largely attributed to the late Shiela Lawrence of Monticello, who began feeding the swans daily 25 years ago.
Kubota chairman and president Yasuo Masumoto indicated in an interview with Kyoto News on Thursday his readiness to acquire a foreign maker of large field-farming machinery by the end of this year to expand overseas operations, Kyodo News reported.
Masumoto, 65, also said the Osaka-based machinery maker plans to raise the ratio of overseas operations in its group sales to more than 70% in fiscal 2017 through March 2018....More
