Porter-Cable recently added six new tools to its 20v cordless power tool line. The tools have interchangeable lithium ion batteries, as well as power and performance without a big price tag. Team FIN, a group of farmers who test products for Farm Industry News, tested four of the line’s new cordless tools, rating them on a scale of 1 to 5.

  • 1/2-in. drill/driver

The 20v 1/2-in. drill/driver has a powerful motor and a high-speed transmission in a compact size. The three-speed gear transmission delivers zero to 400 rpm in low speed for high-torque applications, and zero to 1,600 rpm in high speed for low-torque applications. At 3.5 lbs. (when used with a compact battery), the tool is under 8 in. long. Team FIN liked its easy-to-use forward/reverse switch and comfortable grip. The body has rubber guards, along with a bright LED, battery fuel gauge, belt clip and two magnetic bit tip holders on the top.

Rated: 5

  • Impact driver

The 20v impact driver performs in a compact package. The motor and transmission generate 1,495 in.-lbs. of maximum torque, while the variable-speed trigger delivers zero to 2,900 rpm and zero to 3,100 beats per minute. Team FIN says it’s aggressive and fast. The only improvement Team FIN would make is to include a low speed for precise applications, as the impact starts out faster than ideal for some uses.

Rated: 5

  • Reciprocating tiger saw

Team FIN was impressed by the 20v reciprocating tiger saw. At 4.4 lbs. and 14.5 in. in length, the tool provides power in a compact design. The tool delivers a 1-in. stroke length and zero to 3,000 strokes per minute. It has a tool-free blade change that is quick and effortless to use. Team FIN liked the tiger saw’s lightweight, balanced design and power. The tool felt like it had a lot of torque and speed.

Rated: 5

  • Cut-off tool/grinder

The 20v cut-off tool/grinder offers a high-performance motor that delivers 8,500 rpm. Its cast-metal gear housing dissipates heat during long use. Team FIN says the tool has plenty of torque and operates smoothly. It features a three-position side-handle, including a top position that Team FIN says would be especially handy for certain cut-off applications. Team FIN also appreciated the tool’s simple on/off trigger and lock/unlock system. The only thing Team FIN criticized was that the tool seemed a little lengthy and unbalanced.

Rated: 4.8

The 1/2-in. drill/driver (PCCK600LB) costs $149.99; the impact driver (PCCK 640LB) costs $149.99;  the cut-off tool/grinder (PCC761B) costs $49.97 (batteries and charger sold separately); and the reciprocating tiger saw (PCC670B) costs $59.97 (batteries and charger sold separately).
