U.S. combine sales spiked in October, following a 0.7% slump in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2011, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ latest unit retail sales report.

A total of 1,768 self-propelled combines were sold in October, compared to 1,218 in October 2011, pushing the total for the year up to 8,383.

Crary Industries, Inc. and Wayne’s Tile Pro have announced that the two companies entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement that covers all of Wayne’s Tile Pro operations. Wayne’s Tile Pro, located in Morgan, MN, has manufactured quality agricultural tile plows, stringer trailers and other tiling accessories for the past 26 years.

New Tango4 lightweight aluminum corn head for handling more rows

The Tango4 Aluminum Corn Head, displayed at farm shows this summer, weighs 25% less than conventional models constructed of steel. Built in Argentina, the new corn head is being sold in the United States by Tango4, a Pleasureville, KY, company.

The light, aluminum corn head means a combine can handle a header with more rows than usual. Tango4
reports that an aluminum 18-row head is lighter than a typical 12-row steel unit. The new aluminum corn head fits on all brands of combines. It is available in 2 to 22 row models, and row spacing of 18, 20, 22 and 30 in.

Tips for harvesting drought-damaged corn this fall

As harvest begins in drought-damaged cornfields, product specialists from John Deere Harvester Works have released some tips and recommendations for maximizing combine performance.

1. Inspect the combine for worn concaves and threshing elements and replace as needed. Make sure the concaves are level and zero them to the rotor. This will give a more accurate setting/reading for concave clearance.

This year, the winner will receive a Lexion combine and header – specified to the size and crops grown on the winner’s farm – for a full year of harvesting.

It’s a problem every farmer hopes to avoid: “down” or lodged corn that cuts yields and turns harvest into an endurance trial.

In 2011 straight-line winds produced wide swaths of damage across Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin, prompting some growers to wonder if lodging is becoming more common. At Kelderman Manufacturing, a builder of combine reels, Gary Kelderman believes corn lodging is an increasing problem.
