The thriving utility tractor market beckons many manufacturers, including John Deere. The company known for solid workhorses in the field also makes attractive smaller-horsepower models. Deere recently introduced a new series of tractors that fills out its utility lines. This series will compete in the 40- to 90-hp market in which 53,000 tractors are sold a year.

Deere brought members of the media to test the new tractor line in the rain-soaked fields of Florida. Just outside Sarasota, editors tried out the new models and tested the hydraulics with loader work and mowing. A downpour didn't dampen the new tractors' ease of operation and operator comfort. Clearly, Deere has designed the new utility line to be just as competitive in its market as its larger-horsepower cousins are in their markets.

Small but powerful

The new 5025 series tractors are designed with many features normally found on higher-horsepower tractors. This allows operators to handle more demanding jobs on the farm. Typical jobs include loader work, PTO applications like mowing and spraying, fieldwork like tilling and planting, and light fieldwork like rotary tilling. The new tractors proved to be easy to operate and comfortable to drive.

The series consists of four tractor models with engine power ranging from 56 to 91 hp. The 5225 model has 56 hp, the 5325 has 67 hp, the 5425 has 81 hp, and the 5525 has 91 hp. PTO horsepower on these models ranges from 45 to 75 hp. Deere equipped the models with its PowerTech engines, all turbocharged.

All of the models come standard with Deere's synchronized shuttle shift transmission called SyncShuttle. It includes nine forward speeds and three reverse speeds. The transmission may be upgraded to a PowrReverser with either 12 forward and 12 reverse speeds or 24 forward and 24 reverse speeds.

More hydraulics

Hydraulics are beefed up in the new models to help operators do more work faster. They boast an 18.5-gpm flow rate that provides faster loader cycle times. The tractors also are equipped with six selective control valves (SCVs): three rear SCVs and three mid SCVs. The hydraulics may be upgraded by purchasing the option for the deluxe SCV with selectable detents, no detent and continuous detent with auto kick-out, and the option for triple mid SCVs.

Deere went after comfort and operator convenience when designing the line. A digital readout gives ground speed on the dashboard display. All controls are color coded. The electrohydraulic reverser, installed on the steering column, offers easy directional control.
