Tool storage grows up

Here's a way to stack cabinets and store more tools nd parts without wasting floor space.
After we published a story about space-saving, industrial-style Vidmar cabinets (January 1997 issue, page 68), our readers voted them one of the top products of 1997.
If you bought a few of those cabinet and once again find yourself short on floor space, Stanley Storage introduces the next level in storage called the Mini-Mezz.
This new configuration lets you stack your Vidmar cabinets and add storage without adding floor space. Two rows of cabinets are placed back to back to create a base. A second level of cabinets is placed on top of one side of the base; a non-skid mat, placed on the top of the other side, creates a mezzanine. Stairs bolted to the first level give access to the second level. Stanley provides all components for around 5% of the cost of the cabinets, plus shipping.
"One was put up at a dealership so it could avoid building a new building," says Tibor Egervary, marketing services manager for Stanley Storage Systems. "Farm equipment has a huge number of different parts, and every year there are more models, so the dealer needed more cabinets."
How do you know if you need a Mini-Mezz? "In practical terms, when people get to around 15 cabinets and run out of horizontal space, that's the point it makes sense," says Egervary. "But I've seen as few as nine cabinets and you could stack as few as two cabinets. It is all a function of space available."
Two Vidmar cabinets can store the equivalent of five industrial shelves. Each cabinet costs $800 to $1,000 and ranges in height from 27 to 59 in.
