Updated two-way radios

A new two-way radio from Kenwood Communications is loaded with features that rival those of cell phones, but it doesn't require the monthly air-time fees. Designed to handle work-site abuse, the ProTalk XLS radio boasts a 4-mile range and transmits UHF radio signals for reliable communications. The palm-sized, 7-oz. radio is equipped with a built-in VOX capability and vibration alert, a choice of 242 channel combinations, and the ability to handle group communications. A voice scrambler ensures privacy.

Rechargeable batteries allow 10 hours of use, but a selectable lower power setting will increase the time. A desktop charger is included. Standard AA batteries also work in the radio. A tough polycarbonate case helps protect the unit from dents, scratches and breakage. Suggested retail price: $209. Contact Kenwood Communications Corp., Dept. FIN, Technology Park at Johns Creek, 3975 Johns Creek Rd., Suwanee, GA 30024, 800/950-5005, www.kenwood.net or circle 197.
