LOW-LINOLENIC SOYBEANS

CARGILL WILL continue processing Monsanto's Vistive low-linolenic soybeans in 2006 and will accelerate the marketing of Vistive oil for use by the food industry. Cargill will contract with Iowa growers for up to 150,000 acres of Vistive soybean production. The company will pay a premium to producers who grow Vistive soybeans under contract. Then it will crush and sell the processed soybean oil to food companies.
Vistive soybeans were developed through conventional breeding and contain less than 3% linolenic acid. Monsanto expects Vistive soybeans to be grown on nearly 500,000 total acres in 2006. Cargill was one of the initial Vistive processors in 2005.
