GROWERS SHOULD soon have a new seed trait in their arsenal for battling corn rootworm. The new trait called Herculex RW Rootworm Protection was developed through the joint research efforts of Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred International. The companies say they will market the new trait once it receives all U.S. approvals, which the companies expect this fall.

Herculex RW contains the Cry34/35Ab1 protein complex that is derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Company literature reports that field trials show the new trait offers protection against larval stages of the main corn rootworm pests, including western corn rootworm, northern corn rootworm and Mexican corn rootworm.

Dow and Pioneer also plan to stack the new Herculex RW trait with the current Herculex I insect protection trait for corn borer and call it Herculex Xtra Insect Protection. Herculex products are tolerant to Liberty herbicide.

Dow is currently seeking registration of an insect resistance management program for both Herculex RW and Herculex Xtra.
