Terminator terminated

Nov 1, 1999 12:00 PM, Business of buying

Monsanto recently announced it will not sell seeds with the "terminator" gene. Monsanto, through the pending purchase of Delta & Pine Land, should acquire new technology allowing the production of seeds that produce infertile crops. Both companies hoped the new technology would prevent brown-bagging seeds, the practice of keeping harvested seeds for planting the next spring. But Monsanto, sitting deep in the harsh biotechnology debate around the world, is backing away from the technology.
