EPA initiates new Bt corn review

Sep 1, 2000 12:00 PM, FARM INDUSTRY NEWS STAFF

The Environmental Protection Agency is undertaking a comprehensive scientific and public review of its current approval for Bt corn and cotton. According to the Federal Register, this reassessment is intended to assure that the decisions on the renewal of the approvals "are based on the most current health and ecological data." EPA will publish its risk assessment for public comment and conduct a scientific peer review. Because of the additional time needed for this process, the agency is extending the existing license for Bt corn and cotton to September 30, 2001.
