Seed lawsuits expand

Syngenta's recent proposed acquisition of two major seed companies (Garst Seed and Golden Harvest Seed) has generated more lawsuit activity from Monsanto Company. Monsanto expanded a breach-of-contract lawsuit it filed earlier and now seeks damages and the termination of a license originally granted to Ciba-Geigy Corporation for Roundup Ready soybeans. Monsanto initiated another lawsuit for patent infringement to stop Syngenta Seeds from developing, using and selling herbicide-tolerant corn seed such as Monsanto's GA21 Roundup Ready corn product. These actions are in addition to another lawsuit Monsanto filed in May alleging that Syngenta violated a Monsanto patent related to glyphosate-tolerant plants.
