REFUGE REGS GROW

The new corn hybrids with stacked Bt traits require close attention to the insect-resistance management requirements. The YieldGard Plus hybrid contains both the YieldGard corn borer gene and the YieldGard rootworm gene. The refuge requirements are different for the two traits. The corn rootworm refuge must be within or adjacent to the YieldGard Plus field. The corn borer refuge may be up to a half mile from the YieldGard Plus field. Growers may meet the IRM rules in a common refuge or in separate refuges. Up to 80% of corn acres in each field may be planted with hybrids that contain Bt corn borer protection or rootworm protection. A minimum of 20% of corn acres must be planted with hybrids that do not cotain the Bt gene for corn borer protection or rootworm protection.
