Green drive

Green Drive

The SimpleTech (Re)Drive has gone “green.” Its renewable bamboo and recyclable aluminum enclosure encases a power-sipping hard drive. There’s no need for a fan, because the aluminum acts as a heat sink. It consumes about 40% less power than standard external hard drives and eliminates up to 475 lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions over the life of the drive, according to the manufacturer. Its Turbo USB 2.0 interface is up to 25% faster than standard USB 2.0, so backups are fast.

Buyers receive 2 gigabytes of online data storage free of charge with purchase of the drive. Packaging is green, too; the user guide is printed on the inside of the box. The suggested retail price for a 500-gigabyte drive is $159.99. Contact Fabrik/SimpleTech, Dept. FIN, 1830 E. Warner Ave., Santa Ana, CA 92705, 877/486-1555, www.fabrik.com.
