Hilti unveiled the world’s first cordless combination hammer drill, the TE 30-A36. It has all the operating stats of pneumatic and corded tools with the convenience of being cordless. Team FIN tested the mega tool and rated its performance on a scale of 1 to 5.
With a high-efficiency brushless motor and a high-mass hammering mechanism, the tool delivers single impact energy of 2.7 ft.-lbs. and a full hammering frequency of 4,500 impacts/min. According to Hilti, the tool drills and chips into concrete up to 40% faster than the largest SDS corded tools on the market.
The combihammer has a drilling diameter rate of 3/16 to 1 and 1/8 in. for hammer drill bits, 1 and 3/16 to 1 and 1/2 in. for breach bits, 3/8 to 1 and 3/8 in. for forming and instillation drill bits, and 2 and 5/8 to 3 and 9/16 in. for percussion core bits.
Team FIN put the TE 30-A36 to the test doing demolition in an old hog barn, and was impressed by the tool’s chisel power. Using the chisel attachment, the combihammer busted through 3-in. concrete walls. The tool made surprisingly quick progress as it chipped away and broke chunks from the wall. When testing drill bits, Team FIN was amazed by how fast the combiham-mer bored through deep material. It had no problem chewing through tough concrete, even with a 1-in.-dia. bit.
The combihammer features active vibration reduction to improve operator comfort, which Team FIN says really helps — the tool has little vibration. It is easy to operate and includes two 36v fast-charging battery packs. Considering the power it exerts, Team FIN says the batteries lasted longer than they anticipated.
The tool comes equipped with a variable speed switch, reversing switch and depth gauge. It also has an active torque control system that stops the motor almost instantly if the bit binds and the housing begins to rotate.
Team FIN was impressed by the tool’s performance. It has incredible power with the versatility of being cordless. While the price may be a deterrent, it would be a nice tool to have. Team FIN says the TE 30-A36 is ideal for large-scale demolition or construction jobs.
