Automation and precision farming took a new turn at the large Paris farm show called SIMA. Both Case IH and John Deere displayed technology that shows a tractor relinquishing control. For Case IH, tractor control is turned over to a combine while John Deere relinquishes control to an implement.
Case IH introduced its new V2V wireless technology. The companyplans to offer a kit in 2012 that allows a combine to take control of a tractor and grain cart for efficient and precise unloading. The tractor will run in tandem with the combine. Case IH won a gold medal from SIMA in the show's innovation contest.
John Deere also earned a gold medal for new technology and innovation. The company started selling in Europe its Tractor Implement Automation (TIA) system that allows an implement to take control of the tractor. Deere is selling software that allows its new round balers including the 864 Premium baler and the just introduced 990 and 960 balers to operate a tractor when in the baling mode.
The TIA system depends on ISOBUS communications between tractor and implement. TIA decides when to stop the tractor, baling, tying and ejection. The system is used on other implements including a forage wagon. In this case, a sensor on the front of the tractor and on the PTO to detect its load helps it determine the speed of the tractor.
Also on display at SIMA is a touch-screen computer/controller with access to markets and weather. Internet access should follow soon. Isagri introduced the new multi-site onboard computer.
