In early October, Koch Agronomic Services completed its purchase of Agrotain International, an acquisition that was announced in late July. Koch Agronomic Services is a subsidiary of Koch Fertilizer. Koch Industries is the parent company and is listed by Forbes as one of the largest private companies in the United States.
Agrotain produces fertilizer stabilizer products for urea and urea-based liquid fertilizers. A fairly new company, it was started in 2000 with four people and now has 65 people on the payroll, according to Jeff Whetstine, Agrotain vice president of global marketing.
Agrotain experienced a banner year with virtually all fertilizer products sold out by the end of the season, Whetstine said. “We had extreme weather and that makes a perfect situation for nitrogen loss,” he explained. “People were looking to protect nitrogen with Agrotain technology.
“We look to the future to expand our operation and Koch has significant resources that are going to help us grow the business,” Whetstine added. “We are making plans to expand, knowing that commodity prices should stay high and fertilizer prices remain firm.”
Agrotain reports it is the world’s largest producer of StabilizedNitrogen fertilizers, which are marketed under the brands Agrotain, Agrotain Plus, SuperU, HYDREXX, UMAXX and UFLEXX. StabilizedNitrogen fertilizer products contain proprietary nitrogen stabilizer technology.
Koch Agronomic Services was formed just last year. It offers the Nitamin and Nitamin Nfusion slow-release nitrogen fertilizer brands, purchased from Georgia-Pacific Chemicals.
Koch Fertilizer and its affiliates own or have interests in nitrogen fertilizer plants in the United States, Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago. Koch Fertilizer and its affiliates have the capability to manufacture, market and distribute more than 13 million tons of fertilizer products annually.
