Like a plastic rock Chevy claims that it is offering the first pickup truck box that won't dent or corrode. The box is made from a 50/50 mix of urethane and glass fiber and will be available on the 2000 Silverado 4-door, extend-ed cab pickup. Total weight of the bed is 50 lbs., and the tailgate is touted as be-ing 15 lbs. lighter than a current steel one. Exterior panels will be painted the color of the body; interior panels will be splatter-painted dark gray.
Fill in the gap The Tailgate Gap Cover from Time Savers fills in the gap between your truck bed and tailgate. It helps prevent material from falling through the crack and makes it easier to slide cargo in and out of the bed. When the tailgate is down, the cover lies flat; with the tailgate in the closed position, the cover folds into the gap and can prevent moisture buildup. It works with or without bed liners. Price: $50. Contact Time Savers, Dept. FIN, Box 1269, Duvall, WA 98019, 877/844-9069.
Truck bed extender Get the extra length needed in your pickup bed to haul long pipe, haul an extra ATV, or add a piece of plywood or metal and make a shop or lunch-break table out in the field with this add-on Hitch Hand extender.
The extender fits any 2-in., box-frame-mounted receiver hitch and extends out about 31/4 ft. past the truck's lowered tailgate. At the end of the square tube hitch is a 4-ft.-wide U-shaped attachment that holds the extended cargo or metal/wood carrier. The entire unit weighs only 46 lbs. and can support more than 750 lbs. of cargo, according to the maker. Suggested retail price: $150. Contact Happy Hollow Inc., Dept. Scanning mirror Find out who's coming up on your passenger side with Lanescan. It's a tractor-trailer side mirror that, with a press of a button, scans out to three lanes of traffic for better visibility (shown in photo on right). When the button is released, the mirror returns to its original position. A heater inside the mirror defrosts it without overheating. Price: $595.
Lanescan II automatically rotates while you make a right-hand turn. Price: $1,095.
Lanescan III includes all of the above features plus a jackknife warning alarm. If the trailer slides to the left or right during braking, the alarm sounds so you have time to react to the skid. The mirror comes complete with mounting hardware to mount to a West-Coast-style mirror bracket. Price: $1,295. Contact ARCM Corp., Dept.
