New fungicide mix from DuPont combines a new triazole with popular Aproach fungicide. It's designed more for resistant frogeye leaf spot control and other diseases. For soybean white mold you'll still want the higher rate of straight Aproach.
When DuPont rolled out Aproach fungicide in 2013, the key marketing strategy was its ability to control soybean white mold, a growing problem for Midwestern producers. And first-year sales were solid, says Todd Robran, foliar health protfolio manager, DuPont.
For 2014, the company is launching a new product - DuPont Prima - that rolls a triazole into the mix and offers producers in areas with strobilurin-resistant frogeye leaf spot a new option. The strobilurin class of fungicides offer producers high efficacy and a preventive method for keeping disease away. In addition, this class of chemistry has demonstrated the ability to "green" the crop - providing enhanced performance.
DuPont Prima recently received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for sale in 2014. Robran says, the new mix isn't for controlling soybean white mold: "To control soybean white mold we recommend a 9-oz. rate of Aproach. With Aproach Prima at the 6.8-oz rate you won't get that higher rate that is effective on white mold."
For Midwestern growers, Robran says straight Aproach will be the preferred fungicide. For growers facing resistant frogeye leaf spot, Aproach Prima will be the key choice. Frogeye leaf spot resistant to strobilurins was discovered two years ago in Tennessee, and it is spreading.
The triazole in Prima is siproconozole, which is a different triazole than that used by competitive products, Robran says. That also helps with resistance management.
DuPont is part of the Fungicide Resistance Action Council and is working to prevent disease resistance issues as this technology catches on. Strobilurin fungicides were applied on 25% of crops in 2013, and the market is growing as farmers see how this class of products performs. Managing strobilurin resistance is a key issue.
In field tests ahead of registration, DuPont reports that Aproach Prima decreased soybean rust by 92% over an untreated control plot and delivered a 16-bushel yield bump over competitive products. In seed corn, Aproach Prima maintained green leaf area more effectively and increased yield by 11 bushels per acre versus untreated acres. And in a winter wheat trial, Aproach Prima reduced the severity of powdery mildew by nearly 99%, and Septoria tritici - the cause of Septoria leaf blotch - by nearly 85%.
