This fall, Kinze released its new Autonomous Harvest System, and farmers in the Monmouth, Ill., area tested the system out on their cornfields. The system requires no operator for the tractor that follows the combine with a grain cart.

Kinze is continuing its progress on Kinze Autonomy, refining the capabilities of its groundbreaking autonomous row-crop solution and undertaking release previews on three large Illinois farms. Take a ride inside the cab of the tractor and see how the system works in this video from Kinze. The video is impressive, Ill give you that. But as a grain farmer i have some questions..
1. With no driver in the tractor at all, and the combine has a breakdown in the back of the field, now i have to wait for some one to get here to help, or walk to the front of the field? Whereas with an operator in the cart, i can call him on the radio and he can bring the needed supplies to get fixed and running again with minimal down time. Now i know some of yu guys are gonna say i should run a new combine so it dont break, I run a 9870 Deere, but it was man made so it breaks..
2. The field conditions in the video looked to be PERFECT harvest conditions... I know in Ohio here this year they were not even close to perfect, so in the mud, and i mean deep nasty mud, will this autonomous system be able to keep from getting stuck while unloading, or transporting to the semi??? What happens when it buries itself up to the axles in mud? Is the tractor gonna dig itself out of the mud? Didnt think so..
3. With the un-employment stats where they are in todays economy, tell me why again we should be cutting away a job on the farm? I understand labor costs, so i dont need any lectures from you armchair farmers or desk jockeys on that subject. I just dont see where or how this system can be useful in "Real life" scenarios in harvest season. The video is impressive, but if you wanna sell me on this product, do a field demonstration in wet and muddy conditions like we had this past harvest season and show me how it works in the mud... It wont.
