    Deere leads Google in self-driving race, cites the Robot Report

    While doing some background research for a robotics story I’m working on for our August issue, I came across an article by Frank Tobe that I wanted to share.  Tobe is the owner and publisher of The Robot Report, which happens to be a goldmine of information on robotics. His most recent post on 06/27/15 is headlined:  “As Google cars roll out, Deere reminds us of thousands of their self-driving tractors,” in which he makes reference to Google’s sending 25 new self-driving cars onto streets this summer....More

    Whenever I read about autonomous cars and how they are projected to disrupt the auto market by 2025, I’m left to wonder about the benefits of autonomous vehicles. In farm vehicles like tractors, combines, and self-propelled sprayers, I get it. Making them autonomous can reduce labor costs, make farm work easier, make crop input application more accurate, and reduce fuel costs by finding the shortest path and the tractor settings’ sweet spot....More

    Robotic lettuce weeder headed to Midwest crops

    Silicon Valley startup company Blue River Technology, Mountain View, CA, got a lot of press in 2013 when it unveiled a prototype robot that would go through fields of lettuce and ferret out the weakling heads, a process called “thinning.” Well, now it is in the news again. The company recently received $10 million in funding, led by Data Collective Venture Capital, to bring these robots here to the Midwest to weed row crops like corn and soybeans....More

    Kinze unveils latest autonomous grain cart system

    Kinze Manufacturing introduced its latest version of its Autonomous Harvest System in an Illinois field this week. With media on hand, Kinze’s product manager Rhett Schildroth explained the system that works without a driver for the tractor/grain-cart system. The high-tech system involves a ruggedized laptop computer that the combine driver monitors. The tractor is outfitted with sensors, radar and other equipment to make it robotic, yet safe....More
