A performance chip in your pickup increases horsepower and helps save fuel

The Edge performance chip, designed to increase horsepower and torque in your engine, helps maintain higher speeds during pulling. The chip allows you to go up a large hill and shift only once or not at all, instead of the two to three shifts normally required, to help alleviate stress on your engine. It also gives about a 10% increase in fuel economy.

There are two version of the performance chip: a 65 hp and 120 hp. Jon Hoppis Jr. of CMPChips that sells Edge performance chips says that most dealerships do not approve of the chips He recommends talking to your dealer before installing either version if your truck is still under warranty.

To install the chip on gas trucks on 2003 and newer models, you plug the programmer in under the dash and download the program. On 1998 to 2002 models of both gas and diesel trucks, you need to tap the fuel pump wire to install the 120-hp model. For diesel trucks that are 2003 and newer, you can buy the Edge performance chip, plug it into your truck and set the desired horsepower and torque going through your engine.

The temperature limit for any performance chip, including if the temperature probe is in the manifold, is 1,350° F. If the exhaust pipe is several inches behind the turbo, the temperature limit is 1,000° F. A higher temperature could cause damage to your engine.

To compensate for the increased torque and resulting heat, it is recommended to upgrade from a standard 3-in. exhaust pipe to a 5-in. pipe to keep your engine running cooler. If you install the 120-hp version, it is recommended to also add a fuel-pressure gauge and temperature gauge. This will allow you to monitor how high your exhaust temperature is so it doesn’t cause damage.

Make sure to check with a professional about the effect on your warranty and safety issues before you install either version of the performance chip.

Edge now offers the Edge juice with Attitude monitor with the 120-hp version for 1998 and newer trucks that have the gauges built in for $850. Price of the Edge chip is $335.
