ATV built for two

Dec 10, 2002 12:00 PM, Karen McMahon

Bombardier now lets you safely take a rider along when driving an ATV. The new Traxter Max is equipped with a passenger seat and is built to handle the extra weight and stability needed for two riders. Previously, all ATVs, including Bombardier’s, were recommended for single rider use only.

The Canadian manufacturer says it designed the new four-wheeler to meet a growing need for a two-rider ATV. Customers told the company they wanted to be able to accommodate a passenger when driving to work sites.

Comfort for two. The new ATV features a 640-lb. weight capacity, more than enough for two riders and gear. The wheelbase is 10 in. longer than that of the standard Traxter and positions both riders in front of the rear axle for greater stability. Heavier preload springs have been added to handle the load. The suspension includes a single rear swing arm with dual shocks and straight axle.

A step-up passenger seat with back support provides plenty of room for adult riders. Handholds and raised footboards help the passenger anticipate and respond to riding conditions. Bombardier’s step-through design lets the driver get on and off the ATV without bothering the passenger. The vehicle still has ample storage space; it includes a rear rack, large front rack and weather-resistant cargo bin in the front.

Four-wheel power. The Max is powered with a 498cc, single-cylinder Rotax engine. A five-speed, thumb-shifting transmission with high and low range helps drive the machine through all types of terrain. The driver also may select automatic shifting by pushing a tab button on the left handlebar. The ATV is designed for high-torque pulling and is rated with a 1,100-lb. towing capacity. Dry weight of the ATV is 829 lbs. Manufacturer suggested retail price: $7,399.
