McCormick is expanding into the heavy tillage category. Ranging from 185 to 230 PTO hp, the new ZTX230, ZTX260 and ZTX280 tractors bring more power and distinctive design features that set McCormick tractors apart from their competitors.
The ZTX series will tackle heavy tillage and row-crop applications with a new Cummins QSC, 24-valve, 8.3-l engine with full-authority electronics and 24-valve technology. The engine produces ample power and meets Tier II/Stage 2 emission requirements via a number of innovative design features.
The engine uses the Cummins Accumulator Pump System (CAPS). The result is a constant-pressure fuel system to control fuel quantity and injection pressure independent of engine rpm. Higher combustion efficiency produces an increase in torque. An accumulator ensures that the correct amount of pressure is maintained, while an electronically controlled solenoid injection control valve determines the right time to inject the fuel.
The “power bulge” characteristic of this engine increases power output by 15 hp on the ZTX230 and 20 hp on the ZTX260 and ZTX280 as engine speed is pulled down by increasing load.
The power-shift transmission consists of nine clutches, with seven drive shafts providing 18 forward and 8 reverse speeds. All gears are helical-cut for quiet, positive drive transfer; 10 speeds are available within the crucial working speeds of 2.5 to 7.5 mph.
A speed-matching feature is activated by pressing the clutch pedal to match the gear to the ground speed and engine rpm. The transmission will automatically select an appropriate gear to match the ground speed and allow the engine rpm to increase. Speed matching can be used between gears 13 and 18.
The ZTX offers a unique feature called “Triple Shift” to quickly move through the power-shift speeds. When the driver presses both the Triple Shift and the power-shift button simultaneously, the transmission performs three gear changes, reaching operating speed quickly and effortlessly. Triple Shift works from gears 1 to 15 when moving up through the gears and from gear 13 when downshifting.
Optional creep-speed transmission provides 36 forward and 16 reverse gears and offers speeds from .37 mph.
A power shuttle lever to the left of the steering column incorporates the park brake function. Moving the shuttle lever forward or backward electronically changes the direction of travel. This lever can be operated with or without the use of the clutch pedal. Preselected start-off and headland shuttling gears can be programmed to suit the operator's particular requirements.
All three ZTX models come standard with four (or optional five) electronic hydraulic remotes delivering 40 gpm of flow. The driver can adjust flow rate and flow timing using dials located in the driver's seat armrest. Four of the remotes are operated using a pair of short joysticks mounted on the armrest; the fifth valve is controlled using buttons on the seat-mounted multi-controller, which also carries the power-shift buttons and implement linkage lift-lower switch.
The three-point linkage is a heavy-duty design using two large-diameter external cylinders to generate up to 24,255 lbs. of lift. A microprocessor-controlled electronic system provides sensitive draft and position control. Adjustments are made via a simple dial and slider control on the right-hand console.
The ZTX heavy-duty rear axle is complemented by a choice of two front axles, both featuring a hydraulic locking differential to provide four-wheel drive and maximum traction. The ZTX comes standard with a beam axle and heavy-duty final drive units. A 55° steering angle and pivoting mudguards maintain a tight turning radius. An optional suspension axle smooths out the ride over rough terrain and reduces power hop in heavy pulling conditions.
The MTX doesn't sacrifice comfort or operator performance. Large doors on both sides of the cab make it easy to climb in and out. Visibility all around the tractor is excellent from the comfortable air suspension seat. A new hydraulic cab suspension can smooth the ride further. The climate-control system lets the operator dial in a chosen temperature inside the cab. All essential performance and tractor status information is shown on an oval-shaped display.
A multifunction controller is positioned in the seat armrest. The controller includes the power-shift gear change buttons, Triple Shift gear button, hitch raise/lower switch and an optional fifth remote valve control.
A headland turn system automatically engages and disengages the front drive and differential locks for headland turns. It operates these control functions automatically by linking them to the position of the lift arms and/or the speed of the tractor (disengaging above, engaging below 8 mph or when the brakes are applied), or when wheel slip exceeds a preset level.
The McCormick ZTX provides a heavy-duty, 1,000-rpm PTO with a short driveline and electronic overload protection. An “auto PTO” option integrates the PTO control with the headland turn system linked to the position of the implement lift arms.
Prices for the three MTX models range from $138,416 to $166,207. For more information, contact McCormick International USA Inc., Box 81, Pella, IA 50219, 866/327-6733, visit www.mccormickusa.com or www.freeproductinfo.net/fin.
McCormick's mid-size tractor gets a new engine.
The McCormick MTX B-series tractor is evolving. The 100 to 160 PTO hp tractors will get the company's new BetaPower, 6-cyl., 6.7-l turbodiesel engine based on Cummins technology. The engine offers increased displacement of 408 cu. in. versus 366 cu. in. in the previous engine.
For the MTX120, MTX135 and MTX150, the engine uses two valves per cylinder and mechanical fuel injection to produce rated speed (2,200 rpm) power outputs of 100, 112 and 130 hp. The larger MTX165 and MTX185 use four valves per cylinder with electronic common rail fuel injection.
McCormick also offers a new AutoSpeed transmission option in the MTX line. Range change modulation will be ground-speed sensitive for faster range changes under rolling loads. The MTX B-series also adds cab suspension, automatic climate control and new cab instruments.
List prices for the MTX B-series tractors range from $61,455 to $109,565.
