MYSTERY MAGNIFIERS

Could you publish sources from where one can purchase the 20X magnifiers that are needed to scout for soybean rust? Thank you.

David Hest, contributing editor and author of “Be prepared” (March 2005, page 72), found the following sources for magnifiers on the Purdue University Web site (www.ppdl.purdue.edu/ppdl/soybean_rust.html):

www.forestry-suppliers.com/search.asp?stext=magnifying%20glasses
www.gemplers.com/a/pages/ibesttool.asp?UID=200501170957017187297978
www.kooters.com/handlens.html

Sherry Collins, the associate editor of our sister publication The Corn and Soybean Digest, adds, “The magnifiers are getting very hard to find. I know Gempler's has been back ordered for a while now. However, one researcher suggests that growers also can use a microscope that hooks up to a computer and will take digital pictures to send to an extension office. He says it is called a Digital Blue Microscope and you can purchase one from Best Buy for about $80.”
