No-Till Gains Ground

No-Till acres in Illinois for the first time exceeded the number of conventionally tilled acres. The Illinois Department of Agriculture reports that no-till crop acres accounted for 33.1% of all Illinois land planted with corn, soybeans, and small grains while conventionally tilled acres accounted for 31.2%. The higher number of no-till acres is attributed to no-till soybeans, which for the first time in Illinois reached 51% of bean acres. Experts credit higher fuel prices, labor expenses and Roundup Ready soybeans for the move to no-till in soybeans. No-till corn lagged well behind no-till soybeans acres, with only 16.7% of the total corn acres.
