GROWERS BATTLING high fuel costs may find the new Phillips rotary harrow a good option for spring field preparation. Fuel costs to pull the harrow are just $0.50/acre, and the operator can travel at 7 to 10 mph, covering up to 500 acres a day, according to the manufacturer Precision Metal Fabricating. The harrow helps a farmer prepare a field for early planting by taking out lumps and ridges while fluffing and evenly distributing residue.

The new rotary harrow requires little maintenance because its tines are made from high-carbon, hot-forged, heat-treated steel. The harrow comes in 15-, 30- and 43-ft. widths. An operator sitting on the tractor seat can hydraulically fold the harrow into a vertical position for easy transport. The retail price of a 30-ft. harrow is $22,600.
