Farmers who use propane-powered irrigation engines reduced their fuel costs by 56% in comparison with diesel-powered engines, according to a survey conducted by the Propane Education and Research Council’s 2013 Propane Farm Incentive Program.

Maintenance was also reduced by 48%, and overall fuel consumption was reduced by 37% per hour, compared to diesel engines.

148 participants across 16 states participated in the 2013 survey. The farmers that participated installed 214 propane irrigation engines and displaced 180,000 gallons of diesel. They irrigated a total of 21,700 acres of 17 different crops. And 16 different engine models from six equipment manufacturers were used.

In terms of performance, the farmers were also pleased. 86% of those who bought a propane engine to replace another one said the engine performed better. 93% of those in the survey said they were likely to buy another propane irrigation engine.
