TALK

Treated seed

In the story “Seed safety”, nowhere was it mentioned that the only use for treated seed is to plant it in the ground. I work at a country elevator and twice in the past year farmers have delivered treated beans hidden/mixed with regular field beans. This is illegal! Elevators spend a lot of money to undo this problem, and whatever the expense, the farmer and his insurance company are going to foot the bill.

Treated seed can't be sold into feed/food channels. The only recourse for unused treated seed is to a landfill. And that may be subject to local landfill rules.

Farmers need to understand that trying to pass treated seed off as normal grain is a big NO-NO.
