RFID reader

For push-button wireless communication of data used with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags comes the new I.D.ology Lightning Rod EID reader. Weighing less than 32 oz., and with a handle made of a fiberglass composite material, the device is a durable yet convenient way to record data using RFID tags. An indicator light on the Lightning Rod verifies that the link between the reader and a PDA, laptop or desktop is successful.

After initial setup, it only takes a push of a button to establish the link. To let the operator know contact has been made between the tag and the reader in conditions where light is poor or background noise is a problem, the Lightning Rod alerts the user by a vibration, an audible buzz and a color-coded indicator light. Data from up to 500 animals can be recorded and then downloaded through a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Three models are available. The standard model ($795) features a vibrating handle, audible buzz, and color-coded indicator lights. It can store up to 500 readings and send them in real time to a PDA or computer. The display model ($995) also has a two-line LCD readout to display the information being recorded as it happens.

The SmartWire Interface Dongle and software ($1,295) allow the operator to load lists of animals he wants to find and download to the computer the lists of those found and those not found. With this reader the operator feels a longer vibrate as each animal on the list is located. The LCD screen then shows both the visible ear tag on the animal and the reason the operator wants to locate the animal.

All three models are available in 18-, 24- and 36-in. lengths. The Lightning Rod can read all HDX and FDX tags compatible with ISO 11784/11785.
