When your livelihood depends on running the milk pump or silo unloader — or when you desperately need lights, tools and appliances — a generator becomes worth its weight in gold during a power outage. If you need 120/240 VAC power in the field, such as for irrigation pumps or emergency equipment repair, portable generators also make sense for everyday work.

And when machines break in the field, you could sure use a good mobile welder. That's why an engine-driven welder/generator might offer the best value. Welder/generators or “engine drives” suitable for farm and ranch use can produce 120/240 VAC power and 140 to 300 amps of welding power. They can cost less, sometimes $1,000 less, than an equivalent generator-only unit.

More powerful Bobcat

The new Bobcat 250 NT, a new welder/generator from Miller Electric Manufacturing Company, has 75% more MIG and 19% more DC Stick welding power, as well as 19% more generator power, than the company's previous Bobcat unit. The 250 can produce 10,000 peak watts and 9,500 continuous watts. Two 120v duplex receptacles and one 120/240v full KVA receptacle allow the unit to run a variety of tools simultaneously, such as grinders, hammer drills and floodlights. The Bobcat 250 NT's generator power will also run plasma cutters.

The 250 NT performs Stick, DC TIG, and flux cored welding. It is also capable of AC TIG, solid wire and carbon arc gouging with 3/16-in. carbons. The unit's rated output in CC/DC/AC mode is 250 amps at 25v, 100% duty cycle. Four CC ranges (40 to 100, 60 to 140, 80 to 200, and 100 to 250) maximize generator power while welding.

“While Stick welding at 250 amps, the Bobcat 250 NT provides 2,200W of generator power,” says Steve Hidden, product manager, Miller Electric. “The closest comparable unit in the industry has no generator power at 250 amps.”

Versatile machine

A CV rated output of 250 amps, 28v at 100% duty cycle (275 amps, 25v at 60% duty cycle) allows for use of either solid or flux cored wires.

The Bobcat 250 NT can run E71T-11, a typical flux cored wire for fabrication and structural steel applications, at faster travel speeds and higher deposition rates than a 200-amp machine.

For wire welding applications, the unit accepts any voltage sensing feeder, including Miller Electric's Super S-32P, the SuitCase 8VS, the Spoolmatic 30A spool gun and competitor models.

The Bobcat 250 NT design improves reliability by minimizing electrical connections. The unit is rated at 104°F so it runs better in high temperatures. An enclosed generator properly directs airflow for maximum cooling. The battery has 430 cold-cranking amps for reliable starts.

The new Bobcat comes with a choice of engines, including a 20-hp OHV gasoline engine from Kohler Company or Onan. For inside work or other areas where exhaust emissions are a concern, users can select a 20-hp LP engine from Kohler. Suggested retail price of a base unit without leads is $3,399.
