Ease on down the road (c)
Back in 1959 when Dinah Shore sang "See the USA in your Chevrolet," she was crooning about the new four-door Impalas cruising down the highway, heading for Route 66.
In 1986 production of the Impala ceased, but the model was brought back for a short life in the mid '90s. Well, fasten your seat belts. Chevy has brought back the "beauty of big cars" with its new four-door, model 2000 Impala, just unveiled at this year's auto show in Detroit.
The company designers took components and styling from its Lumina and the Oldsmobile Intrigue; and the Impala eventually will replace the Lumina. According to Kevin Rose, manager of product communications, "The appearance and details are a little different; they're not 'vanilla.'"
The new Impala is equipped with a unique tire inflation monitoring system that takes advantage of existing sensors needed for the ABS brakes. The sensors monitor how fast each tire is rotating. If one lags, it needs air.
It will be available in two models: the 3400 V6 with 180 hp at 5,200 rpm and 205 lbs. ft. at 4,000 rpm, and the 3800 V6 LS with 200 hp at 5,200 rpm and 225 lbs. ft. at 4,000 rpm. Both models have a maximum engine speed of 6,000 rpm. Wheelbase is 1101/2 ft., and fuel capacity is 17 gal.
A nice feature is the easy-to-see dash ignition with an antitheft device. In 1965 more Impalas were sold than any other car in a single year, according to Rose. "The Camry has probably become that car today," he says. But the company is optimistic. It's banking on the Impala becoming the market leader and a benchmark for future car design.
