PIONEER HI-BRED in collaboration with Kansas State University developed a screening technique to identify soybean varieties with some resistance to aphid feeding. As a result, Pioneer now rates its soybean varieties according to their ability to ward off aphids. The company reports that certain soybean varieties naturally cut the rate of growth, survival and reproduction of aphids feeding on soybeans. The new rating system reflects how well different varieties resist aphids.
Growers concerned with potential aphid problems in their soybeans may purchase Pioneer soybean seed with exceptional or above-average aphid resistance to allow for less frequent scouting. These varieties may still need spraying. Growers planting soybean varieties with average or below-average ratings should plan to scout more frequently.
