Controlling weeds in corn

BASF Corporation introduces two new herbicides for the corn market.

Outlook controls many grasses and small-seeded broadleaves, such as foxtail, barnyardgrass, panicum, pigweed, waterhemp and nightshade, and can be tankmixed with other herbicides to control even more weeds. It can be applied PPI, preemergence or early postemergence. BASF claims the herbicide offers excellent crop safety and season-long residual activity without restricting crop rotation. Price: $18 to $21/acre, depending on soil type.

Guardsman Max has the same active ingredient as Guardsman herbicide (dimethenamid-P) but with an extra kick of atrazine. Guardsman Max can fight barnyardgrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, nightshade and waterhemp. The herbicide can also be applied as a tankmix or sequential program during preplant, preemergence or early postemergence. It may be able to be used as a one-pass corn herbicide. Price: $19 to $21/acre, depending on soil type.

A new mode of action

Syngenta recently received EPA registration for its new corn herbicide Callisto. The active ingredient in Callisto is mesotrione from the Callistemone class of chemistry. With its unique mode of action, the herbicide controls many broadleaf weeds in corn, such as velvetleaf, cocklebur, waterhemp and lambsquarter. Name change

Syngenta recently changed the name of its seed treatment insecticide from Adage to Cruiser. Cruiser is the global name for Syngenta's thiamethoxam product. Because the company was unable to secure the Cruiser trademark in the U.S. when it received the Section 3 label, it launched the product as Adage. Now that Syngenta has secured the rights to the Cruiser name in the U.S., it has decided to standardize the name globally.
