End NH3 spills

Prevent dangerous anhydrous ammonia releases while working in the field with the new NH3 Safety System. The system provides protection in a breakaway situation by shutting down anhydrous ammonia as the break occurs. Developer of the system, Brad Scudder, reports the system is very simple. A cable attaches to the valve on the nurse tank. When the nurse tank separates from the applicator, the cable comes under tension before the hose does and pulls the valve shut. It then separates by means of a small ring. The anhydrous ammonia system is completely shut down, and no dangerous release of gas occurs.

A grower may add a cable that extends into the tractor cab to manually shut down the system in the event another dangerous situation, such as a hose rupture, occurs.

The system costs $125 and is manufactured by Continental NH3 in Dallas, TX. For more information, contact NH3 Safety, Dept. FIN, 4304 S. 6th St., Rockford, IL 61109-3002, 815/395-1417, visit www.freeproductinfo.net/fin.

Easy auger repairs

Fix up your grain auger system with two new products from Poly Tech.

A new auger liner covers existing auger floors to provide a slippery surface for fast grain movement. The liner is ⅛-in. flexible poly that is preformed to fit the curve of the floor. It comes in a kit and sells for $340. Installation is easy with stainless steel hold-down strips that are precut for accurate positioning. A grower does not need to take the grain floor apart to install the liner. Circle 198.

Growers may now repair steel augers with new auger wear shoes (shown). Poly Tech is selling the wear shoes in more than 135 sizes to cover new or worn steel auger flighting, giving it strength and wear protection. The wear shoes may be ordered in different diameters, pitches and thicknesses. A ⅜-in.-thick, 6-in. wear shoe sells for $25, and a 24-in. shoe costs $70.
