Wireless weather reporting

A new wireless radio modem from Onset Computer Corporation will send climate information up to five miles away to HOBO Weather Stations and Micro Stations. Farmers now may conveniently retrieve and analyze climate data without having to travel to remote sites for manual retrieval. The radio modem will run for one year on six D-cell batteries. Because of its low-power design, it does not require a license. The modem retails for $595.

Growers also may purchase a radio base station with Remote Site Manager software to automatically forward the climate data over the Internet. The software allows the data to be forwarded from the receiving PC to other computers. The software also lets users remotely check weather station status and supports on-demand data off-load or automatic off-load at user-defined intervals. Price for the radio base station with software is $345.

Checking pH

The new Field Scout pH 100 meter from Spectrum Technologies measures pH levels in soil and water. A built-in data logger, GPS interface and RS-232 port make it easy for users to log locations, generate geo-referenced soil maps and manage pH on a site-specific basis. The Field Scout will function virtually anywhere.

The device comes with a carrying case, software with PC cable, AAA batteries, and pH 4 and 7 standards. The electrode is ordered separately. Price of the Field Scout is $567, and a basic pH electrode is $104. Contact Spectrum Technologies, Dept. FIN, 23839 W. PigChamp made easy

The widely used hog records system called PigChamp now can be more easily viewed and manipulated through a new computer interface from FBS Systems. The new interface allows producers to view and sort PigChamp 4 records in a Windows format instead of DOS, which operates the record system. Called PigWings, the new interface runs “on top” of PigChamp 4 and delivers on-the-fly Windows reports. No data conversion is required, and PigChamp remains fully operational.

PigWings offers a spreadsheet-style format that allows a user to drag and drop columns, drill down on underlying data, sort data within reports, generate graphs and charts, and export directly to Excel or databases.

FBS Systems is offering PigWings free to users until June 30. It is available on CD or online. Call FBS Systems at 800/437-7638, or visit www.fbssystems.com.
