One tough ride

A little over a week ago, Team FIN tractor- and truck-tester Daryl Bridenbaugh got hurt while doing something he loved: driving his John Deere 4020 tractor.

We got the news while editing one of his stories about the new Ram trucks recently previewed at the New York International Auto Show. His wife, Peggy, told us that earlier in the evening Daryl was driving down a hill pulling a full nitrogen applicator when suddenly the rig tipped over, pinning him under the tractor.

“Luckily he only has a lot of bumps and bruises and a broken pelvis,” writes Peggy in an email. “Lucky you say? The tractor stopped rolling before it got to his abdomen, chest or head. It could have been so much worse.”

Daryl, fortunately, had his cell with him. He gathered his wits enough to call Peggy and 911. A record 22 minutes later, the EMS arrived and loaded him on a helicopter. He was airlifted to nearby Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, Ohio, where just yesterday he was released from ICU.

While Daryl begins the upward battle of physical therapy, we thought it only fitting to pay tribute to five rides that ended on a much better note. May you be back in the seat very soon dear friend.
