Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI

The Yamaha Grizzly 700 was the clear winner among the three large ATVs included in the test. It earned the highest scores in each category, and drivers gave the most positive comments about it.

Key to the top scoring was the vehicle's electric power steering and new features designed for comfort and convenience, such as the lighted digital display.

“The Grizzly I thought had the most power and best ride. I was impressed,” reported Paul Gervais, Tracy, MN. “If a person were out all day, power steering would be good. I especially noticed it when pulling the log and turning at the end. With conventional steering, you get the handlebar chatter. Power steering certainly reduced that.”

Shirley Hodgen also liked Yamaha's new seat, which she said was narrower and softer than the other ATV seats. “It's like riding on a foam pillow with 6 in. of foam,” she said.

And it wasn't just the middle-aged drivers who commented on the Grizzly's comfortable ride. The youngest driver Jake Gervais from Tracy, MN, also noticed the vehicle's comfort. “It just seemed to fit me,” he said. “All the controls were very accessible.” He also liked having all the information on one lighted display where he could quickly view it all.

Another plus the test drivers noted was the machine's engine braking in both low and high range. In low, the ATV slowed to 3 mph and in high with a load it slowed to 3 mph, according to Hodgen.

The major drawback for some drivers was the extra price for the vehicle. But for others, that wasn't a problem. “The price for the Yamaha is worth it for the extra frills and comfort,” Hodgen said. “I enjoyed riding it.”

VERDICT

All the test drivers agreed that this Grizzly 700 with its power steering is a powerful, comfortable and well-thought-out vehicle. Only the high price made some think twice about buying it.
